We all know what it feels like to be pushed and pulled by life.

When things go well, we feel confident. When something goes wrong, our whole experience can shift. We are praised and feel encouraged; criticized and begin to doubt ourselves. We gain something, lose something, feel seen, feel overlooked, experience pleasure, experience pain.

Buddhist teachings describe these recurring patterns as the Eight Worldly Concerns: pleasure and pain, praise and blame, fame and insignificance, gain and loss.

The point is not to make these conditions disappear. They are part of life, but we can learn to relate to them with greater awareness, clarity, and freedom.

In this five-week series, we will explore the traditional Buddhist teachings on the Eight Worldly Concerns and examine how they show up in our own lives.

Drawing on Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche’s Emotional Rescue teachings and the practical method of Mindful Gap, Clear Seeing, and Letting Go, each session will combine teaching, meditation, personal reflection, small-group exercises, and discussion. We will learn to recognize familiar patterns as they arise, create more space before reacting, see our experience more clearly, and gradually develop a freer and more spacious way of responding to both the pleasant and difficult moments of life.

The aim of the series is not simply to understand the Eight Worldly Concerns as a Buddhist teaching, but to recognize our own relationship with them—and to begin transforming that relationship in ways we can carry into everyday life.
