Losar is the Tibetan New Year and 2026 is the Year of Fire Horse. This is a time to start with a new outlook as we set the tone for the coming year. “Lo” means “year” or “age,” and “sar” means “fresh” or “new.” It is a time to come together as a sangha, share our heartfelt aspirations, mark transitions in leadership roles, and honor our teachers.
It is the custom at Nalandabodhi to host sessions of protector practice in the days before Losar, the lunar new year. The purpose of these practices is to purify any remaining negativity from the past year and clear away obstacles for the coming year.
Nalandabodhi’s main pre-Losar protector practices are the Mahakala pujas (in Tibetan) hosted by Nalandabodhi Vancouver. English protector practices are being offered as a supplement by Nalandabodhi Seattle and Nalandabodhi Colorado.
This year our pre-Losar protector practices take place from 5:30-7:00p PT on Feb. 14, 15 and 16; Nalandabodhi’s Losar celebration will be observed Wednesday, February 18, 2026. Please celebrate with your local sangha or join Nalandabodhi Seattle’s celebration at Nalanda West or online.
