ON ZOOM: Wednesdays, January 20 – February 24, 2021
In the Nalandabodhi Path of Study, Hinayana studies introduce you to Buddhism as a science of mind, or method of investigation. Your study of the Hinayana is divided into two courses:
The first course (HIN 201) covers the ground or view of Hinayana, and the second (HIN 202) covers the Hinayana path and its results.
This first course in the series, The Hinayana View, introduces you to the Hinayana as the indispensable foundation of the three-yana system of Buddhist study (Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana). Then you will learn the main elements of the Hinayana view, through a detailed examination of the building blocks of the Buddhist science of mind.
Also known as the “foundational vehicle,” Hinayana is the basis of entering the path as taught in the Vajrayana Buddhist traditions. In this stage of study and contemplation, we take a courageous look at our personal unease and suffering, as well as our comfort and happiness. By working with these experiences, we learn how to step away from confusion and toward truly helping ourselves and others.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Buddhism
Core curriculum materials are drawn primarily from the teachings of Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, who also designed the curriculum. Please purchase from the Nalanda Bookstore. You can order the texts of both courses (HIN 201 and 202) separately or together.
